I never expected to become a health coach. I moved to Austin in the late 70’s and earned a biology degree from UT and I’ve been here ever since. I worked in the technology and telecommunications sectors in Austin but I was always interested in health and nutrition.
Heart disease and cancer managed to get my undivided attention and caused me to reexamine my enthusiasm for my “heart healthy whole grains” approach and getting laid off as I was nearing retirement gave me the opportunity to rethink what I wanted to be doing with the rest of my life.
Until I read Robb Wolf’s, The Paleo Solution, I never spent 5 minutes thinking about the possibility that characteristics that helped my distant ancestors survive food scarcity and hardship might have something to do with why so many people (including me) were struggling with things like heart disease and cancer today.
I took Mark Sisson’s training to become a Primal Health Coach and while I was at it, I enrolled in the National Academy of Sports Medicine’s program to become a personal trainer.
Once some of my friends and family saw the meals that my wife Jude and I were eating and the difference it was making with our weight and our health, a few of them wanted to know if I could help them.
I might go with them to the grocery store, help them figure out some easy meals to make and invariably they’d start noticing a difference in how they looked but more importantly how they felt.
A couple of years ago I posted a video on social media of one of my exercise snacks. These are just 30-40 seconds of exercise that focus on improving strength, balance and mobility and the response has been pretty surprising. Millions of people have seen the videos and many of the people tell me how much difference these exercises are making in their lives.
Aging shouldn’t suck and getting stronger and improving your balance, mobility and resiliency shouldn’t be some joyless, unending grind.
